CLIMATE SIREN message about the Rio Earth Summit (sent out before the action on 23rd June 2012).
CLIMATE SIREN is calling for a great effort of civil disobedience in order to demand urgent, concerted and meaningful action to tackle the unprecedented national and global emergency presented by the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate. We are calling initially for a conspicuous act of civil disobedience in London on Saturday June 23rd 2012, the day after the end of the Rio Earth Summit.
We commend and endorse all that is best in the spirit of the Rio Earth Summit. We are grateful for the aspirations and the efforts of all those wh brought about this focusing of attention on the world’s great environmental problems back in 1992, in the years since, and once again, during this year, 2012.
However, the simple bitter truth is that the Rio summit of 1992 failed to bring about action at the global level in any way commensurate with the scale of the environmental, and especially climate, crises that we faced. And further to that you would need to be, frankly, naive or dishonest to say that there was any chance of the Rio + 20 conference, this year, making any substantial progress in turning back the tide of environmental degradation and climatic destabilisation that we are now witnessing. The process is flawed and doomed on so many levels, lacking scope and ambition, lacking the political conditions that might allow it to succeed, riddled with the malign influence of vested interests.
Rio + 20 will be a failure like many failures before but nevertheless a momentous failure with the gravest of consequences. We will be right, therefore, not to let this failure go unmarked.
But whilst as global citizens we decry this failure of the gobal community we should hold accountable those closer to home who hold sway over our most imediate potential for large scale collective action. Those with most power are most to blame and we will address our protest and our impassioned call to action , to those who who make the laws and run the country, those with most power to act. In this spirit we are calling for a conspicuous act of civil disobedience in London on Saturday June 23rd 2012, the day after the end of the Rio Earth Summit.
